RP Mystic’s Guide to Virgo Season

Photo of “Signs & Skymates: The Ultimate Guide to Astrological Compatibility” laid next to a decorative white starburst above a pink and green iridescent backdrop

Virgo Season usually occurs between August 23rd and September 22nd of each year. Symbolized by the Virgin, this mutable earth sign corresponds to the 6th zodiac sign of the year. In her book, Signs & Skymates: The Ultimate Guide to Astrological Compatibility, author and astrologer Dossé-Via Trenou writes of this zodiac sign: “Virgos have the reputation of being control freaks, prudes, obsessive critics, and party poopers. But I find these generalizations overly simplistic, and anyone who paints Virgo in that light risks missing out on the abundance of Virgo’s true nature. At their best, Virgo is peace. Virgo knows how to connect with not only Earth but all elements. When their basic needs are met, Virgo knows how to simply be; they know how to live simply, mindfully, and in tune with their body’s needs. When Virgo feels safe in their body, they feel safe in their mind, and that’s when their portals of creativity, sexuality, and magic are revealed.

Explore the Virgo sign’s astrological connections—spanning romance, friendship, and even self-discovery—with the abridged paperback edition: The Essential Signs & Skymates: Astrological Compatibility for Every Sign.

Here, we’ve gathered enchanting correspondences, empowering rituals, and powerful crystals to embrace Virgo Season with intention.

The Astrology of Virgo

Since every zodiac season presents an opportunity to dive deep within yourself, let’s start by going over the basic aspects of Virgo from Dossé-Via Trenou’s Signs & Skymates: Astrological Compatibility Deck.

Planetary Ruler: Mercury, The Planet of Communication

In Yorùbá spirituality, Mercury is represented by Èsù. He’s known as the master of languages, a trickster. The guru of both communications and crossroads, Èsù is called on to deepen our verbal and nonverbal gifts as we quickly solve problems using the power of thought, intention, and intellect.

Motto: “I see myself so clearly.”

Modalities and Elements

Modalities and elements help us understand each sign’s behavioral energy and temperament. Virgo expresses mutable earth-sign energy. To understand what these aspects mean for Virgo Season, we turn to Grace Duong’s Mystic Mondays: The Astro Alignment Deck: A Deck and Guidebook for Celestial Connection.

Virgo is a Mutable Sign

Versatility, Flexibility, Adaptability

Within each season, we move through three modalities: Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable. Virgo has Mutable energy, which means just like chameleons, they shift to suit their environment. Virgos in particular adapt through details, needing choice, variety, and time to process information.

Virgo is an Earth Sign

Pragmatic, Grounded, Enduring

All four elements—Fire, Water, Air, and Earth—are represented in each modality. The element can indicate the temperament and nature of the person with that sign and inform on what other zodiac signs they get along with best.

The element of Earth represents Virgo. Rooted in reality, Earth signs bring pragmatism, tenacity, and stability. They value what is tangible and feeling through all five senses, indulging in their sensuality and attachment to pleasure… They have the grit and focus to skillfully manage their resources, grounding themselves in the task at hand.

The Fox card from Mystic Mondays: The Cosmic Creatures Deck

Get to Know the Virgo Fox

While the symbol of Virgo is the Virgin, foxes are often associated with Virgos due to their intelligence, adaptability, and attention to detail. Mystic Mondays creator Grace Duong shares the distinctive traits of the Fox in her Cosmic Creatures Deck: A Deck and Guidebook to Connect to the Wilderness Within.

Fox: Cunning, Trickster, Sharpness

Take a look at your surroundings! The Fox is helping you sniff out deception, whether it is in relationships, business, or your environment. Look to see if anything is misleading or rubbing you the wrong way—pay attention to those signs. Trust your Fox instincts to decipher the truth. The Fox protects you from being taken advantage of and allows you to use your own discernment to guide the course of your decisions and actions. There’s more than one way of doing things, and the Fox teaches you to sharpen your senses. Although Foxes are active in the day, they are also nocturnal creatures and bring their activities into the night, which gives you a creative edge when concocting scenarios during dreams. Bring some humor into what you do! The Fox is a prankster, can sneak around undetected, and uses its wits to its advantage. Summon the Fox when you need the sharper edge.

The Hermit card from Trickster's Journey

Explore the Tarot Card for Virgo

All zodiac signs are ruled by a tarot card from the Major Arcana, and for Virgos, it’s The Hermit. We’ll dive into the meaning behind this card with Trickster’s Journey: A Tarot Deck and Guidebook by Jia Sung.

In Trickster’s Journey, Jia Sung reimagines the tarot from the perspective of Eastern spirituality—get a closer look at this deck with Jia’s insights on 7 cards in this article.

IX: Hermit

This card calls on us to engage in inner contemplation. The Hermit invites you to take a break from social obligations and spend some time recentering alone. Solitude is a sacred space to contemplate and reevaluate where you are and where you’re going. Ruled by Virgo, earth sign of the maiden.

The Hermit overturned might point to an imbalanced relationship to seclusion. While too little alone time can indicate that you are seeking distraction from your problems by overloading, excessive self-isolation may lead to an inward spiral, where the reality of your life and community becomes increasingly distorted, even nightmarish. The inner world of the self can only be fully understood in the context of its external life.

UPRIGHT: Solitude, reflection, introspection

REVERSE: Isolation, loneliness, withdrawal

A Mercurial Ritual for Virgo Season

Since Virgo is ruled by Mercury, we turn to The Cosmic Symposium, an astrological compendium written by Aubrey Houdeshell and illustrated by Rose Ides, for a Mercurial ritual.

Aubrey writes, “Generally speaking, Mercury represents our logic: it’s here that we can see our reasoning, thought patterns, and rationality… Because of its title as the Magician and its association with magick, we can turn to Mercury for almost anything we’re looking to manifest—especially if it’s something that would transform or elevate us in some way.”

A Mercurial Practice

The card associated with Mercury is the Magician. This card, more than any other card in the deck, is the card of manifestation. The Magician asks us what we want to do, what we want to manifest, and then urges us to acknowledge that we already possess any of the tools, qualities, resources, or skills we could ever need to make that thing happen. This card is about recognizing our potential, seeing our capabilities, and finding the confidence to dig down inside of ourselves and harness these tools. Then it asks us to act. This card is a card of action… When we initiate the process of manifestation through our actions, the Divine Intelligence of the Universe responds and begins to cocreate with us.

Use your favorite tarot or oracle deck for this exercise. You may wish to do this on a Wednesday. Make sure to write down the cards you pull and take the time to write some reflections to better channel that Mercurial energy. You may even wish to journal beforehand. Shuffle the deck until you feel you’re done, and then intuitively draw cards on the following questions:

  • What message do I have to share with the world at this time?
  • How or where can I find greater inspiration in my life?
  • Where am I being called to focus my attention at this time?
  • A message from Mercury.

Grounding Spells for Virgo Season

Since Virgo is an Earth sign, a grounding ritual can be a powerful way to connect with yourself and find a sense of peace.

For this, we turn to Plant Magic at Home, a complete guide to harnessing the power of nature written by Enid Baxter Ryce and illustrated by Claire Harrup. Try the following spells to connect to the element of Earth.

Soil Spell

Select plants whose meanings and colors relate to your desires. Place them in a cloth or paper bag and take them to a wild place. Dig a small hole in the ground with your hands and place them in it. As you concentrate intensely on your intention, cover the plants with soil. Rise and immediately leave the area.

Say, It is done.

Earth Blots

If you are feeling unsettled, rub a handful of soil over a blank piece of paper. Ask the soil, “How can I find my footing?” Pour the soil off the paper and find the answer in the symbols left behind.

Soil Writing

Select a fallen stick from a tree whose meaning and magical properties relate to your intention. Find some soft soil at the base of the tree. Brush away any dry leaves and without disturbing any living ground cover, write your wish into the earth using your stick. Leave your stick with the writing and press your palms to the tree trunk. Let your intentions flow from your hands. When you feel ready, thank the tree for listening.

Tap Into Essential Oils for Virgo Season

Supplementing your self-care rituals with essential oils is beneficial during Virgo Season. These recommendations are courtesy of Cerridwen Greenleaf’s Essential Oils: A Little Introduction to Their Uses and Health Benefits.

[Note: No matter how delightfully scented, please remember that you should never ingest any of these oils. Be careful when working with essential oils; use them in conjunction with carrier or base oils so that they do not irritate your skin. Even diluted, we suggest that you wear clean cotton gloves when preparing oils and do not get the oils in your eyes.]

Bergamot: Bergamot’s origins can be traced to Southeast Asia, where it was prized for its spicy and floral scent. Bergamot oil is most often used to lift your mood and alleviate stress; it’s like liquid sunshine. Send anxiety packing with bergamot essential oil; also exceptional for house magic.

Peppermint: A wonderful therapeutic for headaches, stress, tension, skin irritations, and depression. It is not surprising that peppermint oil is regarded as one of the world’s oldest medicines. It is first-rate in money magic and healing work, and can also be useful in divination.

Oakmoss: Oakmoss has an earthy energy to match its name; it can ground you and remind you of what you are supposed to accomplish in your life. Oakmoss is very uplifting and brings inspiration. It’s an essential oil that is associated with women’s wisdom; it is an attractor of abundance, and it’s highly recommended for money spells.
