RP Mystic’s Guide to Leo Season

Photo of “Signs & Skymates: The Ultimate Guide to Astrological Compatibility” laid next to a decorative white starburst above a pink and green iridescent backdrop

Leo Season usually occurs between July 23rd and August 22nd of each year. Symbolized by the Lion, this fixed earth sign corresponds to the 5th zodiac sign of the year. In her book, Signs & Skymates: The Ultimate Guide to Astrological Compatibility, author and astrologer Dossé-Via Trenou writes of this zodiac sign: “A heart-centered being—that’s Leo’s energy. Even if they’ve been generalized as selfish, controlling, power-hungry, and vain, Leos, like the Sun, are immensely generous, emanating rays of optimism and joy—but this happens only when they themselves are in a good place. Their baseline should be peace within their own self—without that, their rays of sunshine turn destructive, burning both Leo and the collective energy around them.”

Explore the Leo sign’s astrological connections—spanning romance, friendship, and even self-discovery—with the abridged paperback edition: The Essential Signs & Skymates: Astrological Compatibility for Every Sign.

Here, we’ve gathered enchanting correspondences, empowering rituals, and supportive crystals to meaningfully embrace Aquarius Season.

The Astrology of Leo

Since every zodiac season presents an opportunity to dive deep within yourself, let’s start by going over the basic aspects of Leo from Dossé-Via Trenou’s Signs & Skymates: Astrological Compatibility Deck.

Planetary Ruler: The Sun, The Luminary of Essence

In Yorùbá cosmology, the Òrìṣà Obatalà can be seen as a representation of the Sun’s energy. A symbol of clarity and creation, Obatalà is also called the “Sky Father,” similar to Ra in ancient Egypt. The Sun’s placement in our chart shows us how our central energy is expressed or has the potential to be expressed. It exposes our core essence and highlights both our strengths and areas we can improve.

Motto: “Hello! I’m here.

Modalities and Elements

Modalities and elements help us understand each sign’s behavioral energy and temperament. Leo expresses fixed earth-sign energy. To understand what these aspects mean for Leo Season, we turn to Grace Duong’s Mystic Mondays: The Astro Alignment Deck: A Deck and Guidebook for Celestial Connection.

Leo is a Fixed Sign

Action, Momentum, Dedication

Within each season, we move through three modalities: Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable. Leo has Fixed energy, which means they stick to their values and hold strong convictions stabilized through a sense of self.

Leo is a Fire Sign

Radiant, Enthusiastic, Dynamic

All four elements—Fire, Water, Air, and Earth—are represented in each modality. The element can indicate the temperament and nature of the person with that sign and inform on what other zodiac signs they get along with best.

The element of Fire represents Leo. Sparks fly when a Fire sign is present…Fire has the power to transform, generating warmth through flickering flame. However, be careful! When it gets out of hand, Fire can also destroy. Fire signs will need to ensure their flames don’t grow unwieldy, manifesting in impulsive behavior and frustration. When this happens, they’ll need to lean back into their desires and pay attention to what lights them up from the inside out to realign with their source of power.

The Lion card from Mystic Mondays: The Cosmic Creatures Deck

Get to Know the Leo Lion

Mystic Mondays creator Grace Duong shares the distinctive traits of the Lion in her Cosmic Creatures Deck: A Deck and Guidebook to Connect to the Wilderness Within.

Lion: Pride, Legacy, Courage

King of the jungle, the Lion wears its mane regally among its pride. The Lion is a natural-born leader, directing others with an authoritative ease. Inventive and perceptive, the Lion encourages you to step into a role of leadership and believe wholeheartedly in your vision. You are here to build a lasting contribution beyond your lifetime, which means that you need a strong team to help you do it. The legacy you create will take courage, willpower, and strength to get the wheels in motion, but you have all the resources in the world to do it, as you boldly set an example for others. The Lion points to the innate power you must tap into so you can maximize your efforts to the fullest. Be careful of your passion turning into anger, as this could be the quickest way to lose your devoted following. When you learn to channel that anger into constructive outlets, you will be an unstoppable force.

The Strength card from The Artist Decoded Tarot

Explore the Tarot Card for Leo

All zodiac signs are ruled by a tarot card from the Major Arcana, and for Leos, it’s Strength. We’ll dive into the meaning behind this card with Jennifer Sodini and Yoshino’s The Artist Decoded Tarot: A Deck and Guidebook.

VIII Strength: The Brilliance of Resilience

The Strength card represents the power of inner fortitude and the qualities of courage, patience, and gentleness.

The corresponding Hebrew letter, Tet (ט), relates to the human capacity for both good and evil. The serpentine form of the letter can be used as a metaphor for harnessing and directing one’s inner power, as the snake can be a powerful paradox in its capacity for both beauty and harm. It can also help us reconcile duality and appreciate the contrasting gradients within the harmonious whole.

If Strength has shown up in your reading, it can signal a moment when your confidence, convictions, and sense of resilience may be tested.

This card reminds you to practice mindfulness and self-control as you foster might in mind and spirit. Instead of exercising force, attempt to tenderly tame what you’re facing as you navigate any obstacles that may be on the horizon.

UPRIGHT: Vitality, fortitude, courage, self-awareness, empowered presence

REVERSE: Lack of energy, malaise, anxiety, heightened emotions, cowardice

A Peaceful Potion for Leo Season

Leo season is a great time to seek peace within yourself, and this relaxing beverage from Nikki Van De Car’s Potions: A Guide to Cocktails, Tinctures, Tisanes, and Other Witchy Concoctions will do just the trick. This refreshingly cool drink is perfect for summer, combining chamomile and lavender, two herbs considered “powerhouses of calm.” Lavender is also commonly associated with Leo season!

Cold-Brewed Sparkling Tea

Ingredients:

  • 2 teaspoons dried lavender
  • 2 teaspoons dried chamomile
  • Honey, to taste
  • Sparkling water
  • Vodka (optional, and only if you’re 21+!)

Add the dried lavender and dried chamomile to 2 cups of still water (feel free to use the Potions Mini Mortar & Pestle to grind each herb). You can either mix them directly in the water, or use two separate tea strainers—just one will pack the herbs in too tightly and they won’t diffuse properly into the water. Cover the container and pop it into the refrigerator to steep for 6-12 hours.

When it’s ready—or when you have need of it!—stir in some honey to taste and top if off with some sparkling water, perhaps with some vodka to spike it. Sip it slowly as you let your shoulders drop and your heart rate settle. Feel the sparkles on your tongue descending into your body, an effervescence that is dissolving any tension you are holding and blowing it away like bubbles on the breeze.

Tap Into Essential Oils for Leo Season

Supplementing your self-care rituals with essential oils is beneficial during Leo season. These recommendations are courtesy of Cerridwen Greenleaf’s Essential Oils: A Little Introduction to Their Uses and Health Benefits.

[Note: No matter how delightfully scented, please remember that you should never ingest any of these oils. Be careful when working with essential oils; use them in conjunction with carrier or base oils so that they do not irritate your skin. Even diluted, we suggest that you wear clean cotton gloves when preparing oils and do not get the oils in your eyes.]

Lavender: Lavender is soothing, calming, nurturing, and relaxing. This versatile essential oil is a natural antibiotic, antiseptic, sedative, antidepressant, topical treatment for scalds and burns, and a powerful detoxifier. Lavender promotes healing, and the lovely scent has a calming effect that is widely used in aromatherapy.

Rosemary: A woodsy and sweet-smelling oil that is used as a healer to fight flu, coughs, headaches, depression, muscular stress, arthritis, rheumatism, fatigue, and forgetfulness. You can also put a couple of drops in the bath to make aches, pains, and sniffles go away. It is unusual in that it can both relax you and stimulate your mind. Rosemary has a very cleansing energy and can imbue your home with coziness and contentment.

Orange: A light, citrusy oil that restores balance and lifts moods. A few drops of this oil will enhance the potency of any love potion. Orange sachets and other gifts with this oil as an ingredient offer the recipient utter felicity, making it an ideal gift for newlyweds.

Nutmeg: A warm, spicy essential oil that is sweet and somewhat woodsy. Nutmeg blends beautifully with other essential oils in the spice family and strengthens the combination. Nutmeg is very lucky and is wonderful in money magic. It is also fortunate for love and instills loyalty in a relationship.

A Tactile Hair Spell for Leo Season

Leos are known for having great hair, but it’s more than just a superficial trait. Caring for your hair is a way to honor your physical body and connect to the magic within yourself. With this in mind, we’re sharing an enchanting hair mask recipe from The Witchy Homestead: Spells, Rituals, and Remedies for Creating Magic At Home by Nikki Van De Car.

Honey Hair Mask

A hair mask is a wonderful option to really boost shine and softness and to keep your tresses from getting tangled. Pay attention to what your hair needs and use this mask anywhere from once a week to once a month.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 5-10 drops essential oils

Heat the coconut oil until it’s just melted, then stir in the remaining ingredients. Choose your essential oils to match the ones in your homemade shampoo (A Note from RP Mystic: Nikki includes a recipe for Coconut Milk Shampoo in the book, but if you aren’t making your own shampoo, simply use essential oils associated with Leo season, like orange, rosemary, and lavender). Dampen your hair a bit, and then, starting at the tips, work the mask up toward your roots. Cover it up with a shower cap and sip a cup of tea. Relax and read, journal, meditate, or do anything that provides you with a sense of peace. By the time you’ve finished your tea, or around half an hour later, hop into the shower and shampoo as usual.

Here’s something else to keep in mind! The Lion’s Gate Portal occurs during Leo season. Check out RP Mystic’s Guide to the Lion’s Gate Portal to harness the energies of this astrological event.

Harness The Power of Crystals for Leo Season

With Mystic Mondays creator Grace Duong’s Crystal Grid Deck: An 80-Card Deck to Charge Your Intentions, we learn about the energy of crystals and how each one is associated with specific planetary rulers and astrological signs. The following crystals offer support during Leo season in their own unique ways, whether it’s to radiate confidence outward or look inward.

Sulfur: Volcanic, Progress, Inventive
Sourced from volcanic areas, Sulfur is an excellent companion for bottled-up emotions that can manifest as skin conditions, fevers, and emotional outbursts. Sulfur has a negative electrical charge, allowing it to absorb toxicity and destruction from your surroundings. Sulfur also brings to light the natural disasters in your personal landscape, highlighting your shadows in order to clear the path for renewal. This opens up awareness of triggers that can cause eruption, placing consciousness in action.

Golden Healer: Abundance, Expansion, Golden Rays
Universal life force flows strongly with the Golden Healer! With an exceedingly high vibration, Golden Healer carries bioscalar waves, an abundant form of power that increases in spatial mass. This potent energy can expand awareness across multiple dimensions, transforming your vibration all the way down to the cells in your body. Connected to the solar plexus, this stone allows the highest form of healing for your identity and self-worth, releasing ancestral trauma that may have affected you and been passed down through your family lineage.

Sunstone: Leadership, Confidence, Freedom
Sunstone shines bright, igniting willpower underneath the sun’s rays. A stone of leadership, Sunstone gives you the courage to step out on your own and dare to make a difference. Radiating warmth and vitality, Sunstone brings confidence to the beholder and is known to bring good luck. Fortuitous in nature, Sunstone brings out your natural talents, allowing you to shine like the star you are. Sunstone helps fulfill karmic contracts, alleviating pressures around a sense of purpose or fulfillment. Abundance will flow once you nurture your gifts.
