Uplevel Your Life by Harnessing Your Subconscious

Get ready to uplevel your life! Have you ever told yourself that a long-held dream will never come true? Learn how to get this negative story—and any others you’ve been living with—out of your brain and out of your life with help from subconscious breakthrough coach Haley Hoffman Smith.
Haley’s debut book You Have the Magic: Harness the Power of Your Mind to Transform Your Reality teaches us that we can change our own lives by tapping into the power of our subconscious. Read on for an excerpt from Chapter 3 on identifying the limiting beliefs we’ve unknowingly imposed on ourselves and rewriting those stories into their most abundant versions. Once we know what beliefs we’re dealing with, we can use the proven neuroscience of EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) Tapping in tandem with Haley’s personal Subconscious Breakthrough Formula to transform those beliefs, uplevel our lives, and achieve our dreams.
Let’s dive in!
Into the Depths of the Subconscious Mind
We’ve talked a lot about what we can do consciously to change our lives. We can move some serious mountains with the power of visualization and changing how we think. But all that promised transformation (which you may have already experienced if you’ve tried on some new perspectives or started visualizing!) is merely the tip of the iceberg as long as we’re talking about the conscious mind. The real potency is underneath the surface: it’s in our subconscious minds.
Your subconscious rules about 95 percent of the processing of your brain. 95 percent! That means everything we’ve discussed to date is only 5 percent of the equation. This is also where so many people give up, and positive thinking gets a bad rep or is hard to maintain beyond a few spirited days of Alright, NOW is the moment I’m definitely turning my life around!
Willing ourselves to think “Opportunity is out there!” and “Everything just works out for me!” can be incredibly difficult when our subconscious minds are processing very different information. In fact, the subconscious mind may be outright rejecting these new infused thoughts based on limiting beliefs about opportunity or emotionally potent memories from events in the past that did anything but “work out.”
This is also where I got stuck in that swampy abyss before I learned about the Subconscious Breakthrough Formula and EFT Tapping. For as much as my new mindset and those manifesting books served me, I still had a deep trove of limiting subconscious beliefs that kept a metaphorical ceiling above my head in terms of how much I could grow, achieve, and accomplish. I needed to address what was subconscious in order to slingshot forward. My wholehearted attempts to move myself forward and keep my vibe high were destined to lose steam until I looked underneath the proverbial car hood of my own psyche. Why?
Your subconscious mind is a record of everything that has ever happened to you or around you. All of it. Remember how your brain can process only 0.0004 percent of the external stimuli around you at any given moment? That’s just your CONSCIOUS mind.
Your subconscious mind is never missing a single detail.
This means everything—things you can’t remember, things you can, things that were said around you, things you watched in movies, things that were modeled to you—has all been diligently recorded by your subconscious mind. And aside from this very impressive task of accumulating information, it has one other job that it takes very seriously: the responsibility of keeping you safe.
This is innate to the subconscious’s responsibilities because of what it’s in charge of! Your subconscious mind controls all your body’s functions. As you’ve been reading, you haven’t thought consciously, “Oh, shoot! I need to make sure I’m breathing!” You haven’t thought consciously about needing to make your own heart beat or digest your food. If you’re sitting outside basking in the sun, you haven’t thought consciously about turning on some sweat to cool you off. All of this is up to the subconscious mind.
Changing Your Beliefs
As we’ll get into in part 2, I believe one of the most powerful ways to shift your subconscious beliefs is via EFT Tapping to release the old belief, as well as other forms of subconscious work. However, while we’re still in the warmup, here are some tips to start to get your mind going toward a brand-new story. Don’t underestimate these exercises, because you’ll use them forever and ever, even with your new subconscious breakthrough toolbox. People have been changing their belief systems for many a century without the Subconscious Breakthrough Formula and EFT. Just because I’ve found a rapid and fun way to change your life doesn’t mean there aren’t many other ways you can access your inherent magic.
To change our belief systems, we first must know what we’re dealing with. Which leads us to the magical question “How do you KNOW?” (Really, better put, this should be “How do you BELIEVE?”—but we do take on our beliefs as knowledge even if they are not the absolute truth.)
This works for any belief. Survey your life. Pick anything—examples could be “I don’t believe I can start a business that could scale to $1 million” or “I don’t believe I’ll ever move out of my hometown.”
HOW DO YOU KNOW? Let’s get into it:
1. Jot all of it down. Everything that comes to mind. None of it is “wrong.” In fact, all of it is “RIGHT” for you until we look under the proverbial car hood and figure out where it’s coming from and how we can shift it. This list will look a lot like the starving artist example. Who have you seen model this to you? What have you heard? Read? Seen? What has happened to you in your personal experience that proves this belief?
This is commonly one of the most fascinating parts. You’ll realize you’ve been holding on to some wacky evidence. It’s like cleaning out that one random junk drawer that’s been a catch-all for every trinket and loose slip of paper you’ve ever lost. One time, I traced one of my limiting beliefs back to a completely fictional book I’d read in middle school. How did I know I knew that? Because somehow, the title and the premise of the book came to mind as I challenged myself on the belief. As I pieced it together, I realized that the content of the book WAS related to the belief I was unpacking! And included substantial evidence for it, too! Again, a FICTIONAL book. I’m glad I rewired that one out of there!
2. For every single piece of evidence, begin to poke around with a playful curiosity. Are we SURE this is a piece of evidence we could hold up in a court of law? In other words, is it really true? Put your subconscious on trial in advance. Go on, do it. It’s decided to create a whole narrative out of these pieces of evidence . . . so give it some questioning. Is it possible things could be ANY OTHER WAY?
Try on a detective’s hat and perspective: “In what way could this actually have been false?” Some examples:
EVIDENCE: “My dad always says that pursuing a creative career leads to becoming a starving artist.”
POTENTIAL CONTRARY EVIDENCE: What if that’s a belief he adopted from someone else . . . who got it from someone else . . . who got it from someone else . . . and it’s never actually even been true? And I’ve just accepted it as evidence because he told me when I was young?
EVIDENCE: “I tried to sell a script I wrote once. It didn’t get off the ground at all. No interest.”
POTENTIAL CONTRARY EVIDENCE: What if your subconscious just didn’t believe it was possible, so you quite literally didn’t see an email of interest, or your subconscious pulled a fast one on ya and you made a typo in your email address when you submitted the query forms?
EVIDENCE: “Aunt Jane is a singer and she never has any money.”
POTENTIAL CONTRARY EVIDENCE: Maybe Aunt Jane makes $15,000 a gig but actually spends that much in a day on a secret designer purse addiction, and she only says she makes nothing because that’s easier than admitting she has a major spending problem?
The potential contrary evidence can be as silly or as deep or as speculative as you please. It really doesn’t matter. As long as it’s supporting a new and more empowering story, you can take some major creative liberties. Because it’s more than likely that the meaning you’ve derived from the evidence you do have is itself a bit off base, or downright silly and ridiculous.
3. Begin the hunt for positive evidence.
Now that your brain is loosey goosey from that fun, creative assignment, it’s time to look for evidence to the contrary! You may believe you have none, but if you tell your subconscious to look for it, you may just start to see it. Another thing I’ve experienced and witnessed multiple times is the remembering of past evidence as a result of tapping—almost like it was always there, buried underneath the thick filing folder of negative belief evidence.
Again, visualization helps with this. For every belief you’re rewiring, simply asking yourself, “What would I rather believe?” can lead to some major insights. A note here: Make sure what you’d rather believe is the affirmative of something.
So, if you’re working on your belief that work will always lead to burnout, of course you’d rather believe that your work will NOT lead to burnout. But this is still a negative statement. Rather, challenge yourself to find the opposite. What is the opposite of burnout? What might you experience instead?
A new belief could be “Work gives me energy. It feels easy and fun. I have a great work-life balance, and I feel lit up by my entire career!” Wow, now how does that feel in comparison to “It doesn’t give me burnout”?
These affirmative statements also give you direction on what to visualize. You can now start to create mind movies of you experiencing an energy boost at work. What could it feel like and look like if it was easy and fun? How would you know you have a great work-life balance? What would you tell a friend over a catch-up dinner about how much work has been lighting you up lately?
Again, it will feel like you’re making it up, off in make-believe dreamland. Oh well. We had it right as kids. Do it anyway. Replay the new mind movie at least three times a day, adding more specificity and emotion every single time.
Then, in your exterior reality, you’ll start to look for evidence by intentionally seeking out examples of real people who experience ease, fun, and an energy boost in their career. Even if you don’t know them! This could be a celebrity or an idol. They’re still evidence! At the beginning, it’s going to feel like going on an Easter egg hunt because the evidence will be hidden. But a combination of visualizing that it could be true for you and having the intention to find it will lead to more and more evidence.
Pro tip: Make a note in your phone or somewhere readily accessible titled “New Belief Evidence.” Write the belief as an affirmation at the top of the page, then fill in all the evidence you find as it reveals itself to you. What you focus on expands; this will build momentum to keep you finding more and more and more and more evidence. And before you know it, the new belief will be lookin’ CONVINCING. Which is what we want!
It Begins and Ends in the Subconscious Mind
One of my favorite quotes of all time is by Carl Jung: “The psychological rule says that when an inner situation is not made conscious, it happens outside, as fate. That is to say, when the individual remains undivided and does not become conscious of his inner opposite, the world must perforce act out the conflict and be torn into opposing halves.”
Or, as this quote is commonly paraphrased: “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will rule your life and you will call it fate.”
Remember: Your subconscious is the storehouse of everything that’s ever happened to you and around you, and as a result, it’s a well-intentioned yet faulty command center, blocking and creating based on what feels safest. It loves patterns. It loves its beliefs. It loves to protect you based on memories.
Understanding your subconscious mind is like being given the keys to the castle where you can radically change your life. It makes everything make sense. As much as we think the subconscious is going rogue and wish it would just GET WITH THE PROGRAM so we can ascend to the life of our dreams—it’s actually very, very intelligent. It’s so good at protecting us . . . even when that protection is misguided and based on faulty information.
You’re never stuck. You’re never resigned to a fate you don’t want. The Universe/God/Source/a Higher Power WANTS you to have everything you’ve ever wanted—because you are quite literally here for the expansion of consciousness. Your joy uplifts the world.
It’s OLD, OUTDATED, and FALSE that things need to be difficult for you. It’s time to start rethinking everything. What if the status quo hasn’t been evidence of a disempowering story—just faulty lines of coding playing out? What if you can change all of it?
You can. You are the magic. So let’s dive in.
