RP Mystic’s Guide to Libra Season

Photo of “Signs & Skymates: The Ultimate Guide to Astrological Compatibility” laid next to a decorative white starburst above a pink and green iridescent backdrop

Libra Season usually occurs between September 23rd and October 22nd of each year. Symbolized by the Scales, this cardinal air sign corresponds to the seventh zodiac sign of the year. In her book, Signs & Skymates: The Ultimate Guide to Astrological Compatibility, author and astrologer Dossé-Via Trenou writes of this zodiac sign: “Libra represents the give and take of energy in a way that encourages harmony, equilibrium, balance, reciprocity, and flow. Mastering what goes out and comes in. Trusting that even if we’re not fully sure what we’re putting out, what returns to us will serve our growth in some way. Once a Libra has fully embraced and become aware of their own magnetism and beauty, they are truly unstoppable. But contrary to popular belief, Libra’s fascination with self isn’t purely vain, shallow, or conceited. They’re equally fascinated by what exists within them. It’s because Libra has the openness, curiosity, and wisdom to look within that they’re able to shine so brightly externally.”

Explore the Libra sign’s astrological connections—spanning romance, friendship, and even self-discovery—with the abridged paperback edition: The Essential Signs & Skymates: Astrological Compatibility for Every Sign.

Here, we’ve gathered enchanting correspondences, empowering rituals, and powerful crystals to embrace Libra Season with intention.

The Astrology of Libra

Since every zodiac season presents an opportunity to dive deep within yourself, let’s start by going over the basic aspects of Libra from Dossé-Via Trenou’s Signs & Skymates: Astrological Compatibility Deck.

Planetary Ruler: Venus, The Planet of Love and Magnetism

Venus guides us toward knowing how to be in a relationship with ourselves, animals, consciousness, our material world, and the things we may not see. It is the planet of magnetism and social connection. It helps us attract money, beauty, luxury, wealth, abundance, and, at times, frivolity, overindulgence, jealousy, possessiveness, and passion.

Motto: “I see you, seeing me.”

Modalities and Elements

Modalities and elements help us understand each sign’s behavioral energy and temperament. Libra expresses cardinal air-sign energy. To understand what these aspects mean for Libra Season, we turn to Grace Duong’s Mystic Mondays: The Astro Alignment Deck: A Deck and Guidebook for Celestial Connection.

Libra is a Cardinal Sign

Initiation, Spark, Vision

Within each season, we move through three modalities: Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable. Libras have Cardinal energy, which means they take charge through partnerships. These natural leaders like to be first, a ranking that comes naturally for them.

Libra is an Air Sign

Expansive, Intellectual, Inquisitive

All four elements—Fire, Water, Air, and Earth—are represented in each modality. The element can indicate the temperament and nature of the person with that sign and inform on what other zodiac signs they get along with best.

The element of Air represents Libra. Intellectuals at heart, Air signs prefer to live in their mental space, relying on rationality and logic. They are adept at both looking at the big picture and processing the small details. This skill allows them to organize their ideals and share them with humanity, honing their goals to improve society through communication. Air signs can see objectively because they are able to detach emotions from facts, evaluating the truth of the situation. However, to unite the collective, they need to learn how to identify with their emotions and treat them as valuable information and a means to connect with others.

The Swan card from Mystic Mondays: The Cosmic Creatures Deck

Get to Know the Libra Swan

While the symbol of Libra is the Scales, swans are often associated with Libras due to their harmonious nature, beauty, and associations with love and partnership. Mystic Mondays creator Grace Duong shares the distinctive traits of the Swan in her Cosmic Creatures Deck: A Deck and Guidebook to Connect to the Wilderness Within.

Swan: Dignity, Beauty, Elegance

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and the Swan gently guides you with loving intuition and divine feminine energy to recognize your own beauty and grace. This type of beauty is inherent and does not depend on what you do and what your age is––it is simply the splendor of who you are on the soul level. When you connect with this part of yourself, you radiate elegance and allure that is beyond skin-deep and beyond measure. Your beauty is timeless. When you recognize yourself as this wonderful being of light, you can heal the wounds of the ugly duckling who didn’t feel they belonged. The Swan gives you permission to be soft with yourself, to shed the layers that no longer belong to your truth. When you face jealousy, competition, or judgment, instead of feeding insecurities and shame, spread compassion and love. Love yourself unconditionally and show others in your flock how it’s done.

The Justice card from Black Tarot

Explore the Tarot Card for Libra

All zodiac signs are ruled by a tarot card from the Major Arcana, and for Libras, it’s Justice. We’ll dive into the meaning behind this card with Black Tarot: An Ancestral Awakening Deck and Guidebook by Nyasha Williams and illustrated by Kimishka Naidoo.

XI: Justice

Traits: Equity, truth, maybe
Card Description: A scale of justice holds water or life on either side. On one of the sides, a community of individuals works to keep the scales in balance. The collective’s goal is to ensure that justice prevails. The Justice card is a sign of acting with integrity. Remember, every action has a reaction, so make decisions based in both compassion and logic.

When the Justice card is pulled, it is time to consider:
✦ Do you take responsibility for the choices you make and the actions you take?
✦ What do you consider to be truly just?
✦ Do you call on empathy and understanding before making judgment calls?

Flower: Bluebell (humility, justice, consistency)
Element: Air
Chakra: Heart
In Yang: Truth, law, balance, fairness, thorough evaluation, karma, reevaluation of priorities, consequences, honesty, cause and effect
In Yin: Unreliability, deception, unfairness, karmic retribution, corruption, dishonesty, karmic avoidance, injustice, reparations
Aligning: Do physical labor; reflect on values and morals
Affirmation: I am balanced and centered, continually working to create change.

Photo of Cheese Magic

A Baking Ritual for Libra Season

Since Libra season occurs shortly after the autumnal equinox, we turn to a recipe from Cheese Magic: Seasonal Recipes, Plates, and Pairings by Erika Kubick. This particular recipe features plums, often associated with Venus, and also vanilla, often associated with Libra season while also being a perfect dish for fall.

Pecorino Plum Crumble

Serves 4

Like many fruits, plums are associated with Venus, and this warm, bubbling crumble is an altar to the Roman goddess. Oats, cardamom, and vanilla are all ruled by the planet of love, while the Pecorino Romano featured here dates back to the ancient city for which she’s named. Plums and sheep’s milk cheeses are a classic, no-fail pairing; They highlight each other’s fruity notes while the Pecorino’s salty nuttiness contrasts with the plum’s sweetness. Pair it with a hot mug of coffee or glass of champagne.

Ingredients:
● 1 pound plums, pitted and sliced
● 1 vanilla bean or 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
● 3 tablespoons light brown sugar, divided
● ¼ teaspoon Diamond Crystal kosher salt
● ¼ cup all-purpose flour
● ¾ cup rolled oats
● ½ teaspoon ground cardamom
● ½ teaspoon cinnamon
● ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
● 1 ½ ounces Pecorino Romano, finely grated
● ⅓ cup unsalted butter, chopped
● Vanilla ice cream, to serve

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Butter an 8-inch baking dish or skillet.

Place the plums in a medium mixing bowl. Scrape the seeds out of the vanilla bean and add to the plums with 1 tablespoon of the brown sugar, and ¼ tablespoon salt. Stir to combine, and transfer to the baking dish or skillet.

In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, oats, remaining brown sugar, cardamom, cinnamon, and cloves. Stir to incorporate, then add the butter and most of the cheese, reserving a little for topping. Use your hands to work it into the mixture so that crumbles form.

Spread the crumble over the plums in an even layer, and top with the remaining cheese. Bake for 40 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the plum juices are bubbling. Let cool for 10 minutes, then spoon onto plates and serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

A Venusian Ritual for Virgo Season

Since Libra is associated with the planet Venus, we turn to The Cosmic Symposium, an astrological compendium written by Aubrey Houdeshell and illustrated by Rose Ides, for a card divination ritual.

A Venusian Practice

Use your favorite tarot card or oracle deck for the following exercise to better attune yourself to Venusian energy. You may wish to perform this on a Friday. Eat or drink something sweet beforehand, as sweets fall under the domain of Venus. Whenever you’re ready, shuffle the deck and intuitively pull cards to answer the following questions:

  • How can I welcome more pleasure into my life?
  • What does my heart truly need at this moment?
  • What energy represents the type of lover I am?
  • A message from Venus.

Glamour Magick for Libra Season

Since Libra is associated with the planet of Venus, glamour magic, which is any ritual associated with how we adorn our earthly bodies, is a powerful way to attune yourself to the Venusian energy.

One way to work with this energy is a warming and hydrating lip scrub from Nikki Van De Car’s The Witchy Homestead.

Warming Lip Scrub

This warming lip scrub brushes away any flaky skin, bringing some heat––and the element of fire––into the coldest of days. Cinnamon is cleansing and heating, with a gentle grit that doesn’t damage your lips, while honey has natural antibacterial properties, and olive oil can give some moisture back to your lips.

Ingredients:
● ½ teaspoon cinnamon
● ½ teaspoon honey
● ½ teaspoon olive oil

Combine all ingredients and mix well. Store in a small tin or jar. Use your fingertips and rub gently into your lips. Don’t overuse, and allow yourself a few days between applications to give your skin time to heal and replenish.

Tap Into Essential Oils for Libra Season

Supplementing your self-care rituals with essential oils is beneficial during Libra Season. These recommendations are courtesy of Cerridwen Greenleaf’s Essential Oils: A Little Introduction to Their Uses and Health Benefits.

[Note: No matter how delightfully scented, please remember that you should never ingest any of these oils. Be careful when working with essential oils; use them in conjunction with carrier or base oils so that they do not irritate your skin. Even diluted, we suggest that you wear clean cotton gloves when preparing oils and do not get the oils in your eyes.]

Mugwort: Has long been used in magical workings, starting in Mesopotamia and expanding to Europe, Asia, and now the rest of the world. It is used by shamans to achieve heightened levels of awareness. Mugwort helps alleviate headaches and soothes anxiety to restore mental balance and calm.

Thyme: An “old-time” curative, highly valued and widely used by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. Thyme confers boldness and is also a restorative to anyone who has faced challenges or experienced great loss. It is a favorite in green witchery and house magic as a protectant.

Vanilla: Vanilla oil is obtained from the bean of the same name and has one of the most comforting, heartening, and sweet scents of all. It is excellent in house magic to create a cozy and safe sanctuary, imbuing your home with positive, pleasant energy, and it’s useful in spellwork for love and romance. Vanilla raises your personal energy level and helps sharpen mental focus.
