Imagine your most peaceful moment: You are lying in an open field, beneath the branches of a blossoming cherry tree. The air is warm, but there is a gentle breeze keeping you cool. You close your eyes and watch the light flicker beyond your eyelids as the sun peeks through the flowers.

It’s wonderful. And yet, there’s a fly landing on your ankle. You twitch it away. You suddenly remember an email you forgot to send, and you frown. There’s nothing you can do about it now, but the thought is there. A truck rumbles by on the road near the field, disturbing the silence.

These things will happen. Trucks will be loud, insects will annoy, and our minds never really stop working away. The trick is to find peace anyway—the peace that exists beside those disturbances. We live in the world and the world is not perfectly tranquil, but peace does exist and can be found amid all its multifaceted experiences.

The practices in this section draw on serene magic and are intended to help you find peace within and around those distractions and stressors—even in moments that are decidedly not peaceful.

Root Chakra Practice

We cannot feel calm unless we feel safe. Muladhara, the root chakra, governs that feeling of safety. It is the source of the sense of being grounded, of knowing we aren’t going to fly apart. Without it, nothing else is possible. To unblock your root chakra, begin by gathering crystals that will resonate with muladhara: obsidian, hematite, agate, bloodstone, bronzite, or smoky quartz. These physical objects contain mystical properties that will aid you in your quest for calm. You will need a total of five stones.

Sit cross-legged on the earth or the floor if you can’t get out of doors. Place one crystal beneath each of your hips. You don’t have to sit on the crystals—that could be quite uncomfortable. Instead, place them just where your legs rise up from the earth, nestling them so that you can feel them against you, but they aren’t pressing into you. Place one crystal in each of the hollows at the top of your hips. Hold your final crystal in the palm of one hand, cupping the other hand beneath it to support it. Close your hands into a fist, one that is tight, but not clenched—just firm and contained. Lower your fist to your lap.

If you’d like to chant, the sound associated with muladhara is LAM, pronounced “lum.” But if chanting makes you feel exposed or uncomfortable, don’t do it. You can imagine the sound in your mind, if you like, or you can imagine a song that brings you comfort. It might be something sung to you as a child like “You Are My Sunshine.”

Remember the feeling of safety you had when you were young, of being carried and held. Imagine that sense of security like a roof over your head, sheltering you. Imagine the voice of a parent or someone who has always protected and cared for you. Remember them helping you back up when you fell, and recall the feeling of their hand in yours as you crossed the street.

Now, transform that sense of assurance from outside yourself into your own. You have crossed the street on your own for a while now, often ignoring crosswalks. You know what to watch out for. That caring, that protection you receive from others hasn’t gone away—they still love and are there for you. But you also have the ability to protect yourself. You do it all the time, without even thinking about it.

Feel how warm the crystals have grown against your skin. Feel their heat, and know that it is your own.

Softening Lotion

This recipe is adapted from herbalist Rosemary Gladstar. It is gentle enough to use on the face—though you only need a small amount—and if kept cool, it will go for months and months without spoiling. The aloe, coconut, and almond oil will soothe and detox the skin, while the calendula, chamomile, and rose are all imbued with properties that will gently soothe the spirit, as well.

Over very low heat, combine

¾ cup almond oil

1/3 cup coconut oil

½ ounce beeswax

Once the oils have melted, set them aside, letting them come to room temperature. While the mixture is cooling, pull out your blender and combine:

2/3 cup purified water

1/3 cup aloe vera gel
