This 1916 book summarizes the author’s sociological research—attempting to trace the origin of literary genius. Inspired by Sir Francis Galton’s previous study of scientists, the author considered a thousand American writers born before 1851 in terms of background and social status. He then argues for a middle course between nature and nurture.
