Word Magic Offerings for Poetry Month

Words are magic. As we step into National Poetry Month, we take a moment to honor the integral role poetry plays in our culture—not just as ink on a page, but as a living, breathing force.

It’s important to keep in mind that you don’t need to be a poet to slow down and appreciate the weight of carefully placed words. If you have ever felt an emotion that you couldn’t quite name until you saw it written down, poetry is for you.

In the spirit of this celebration, we’ve curated a special collection that honors the magic of words. From thought-provoking journals to a Shakespeare-themed tarot deck, we’ve gathered a selection of unique offerings that prove that poetry and language are powerful tools for transformation.

The Shakespeare Tarot

Explore the timeless themes and rich language of Shakespeare, combined with the ancient wisdom of the tarot deck, with The Shakespeare Tarot: A Deck & Guidebook of the Bard’s Arcana.

Authored by Greg Schicker-Taubman and illustrated by Eunice Choi, The Shakespeare Tarot gives you a glimpse of all of Shakespeare’s confirmed dramatic works, the sonnets, and more. Experience characters from Shakespeare’s world cast into the 78 cards inspired by those found in the original Rider-Waite tarot.

As the world’s most-produced playwright and best-known English language author, Shakespeare has influenced not only what we read and watch, but how we understand and express core aspects of our identities and relationships. To engage with the work of Shakespeare is to encounter and explore the most enduring mysteries of what it means to be human.

The guidebook includes recommended spreads, a brief history of Shakespeare and tarot decks, and detailed card meanings. In the guidebook, author Greg Schicker-Taubman writes how this poetic tarot deck “aims for intuitive and enlightening engagement…[and] features consistent production designs (settings, costumes, and visual motifs) for each play; all cards inspired by the same work share the same design elements.”

The Gentle Chaos Suite

When writing Gentle Chaos: Poems, Tales, and Magic, author Tyler Gaca (aka @ghosthoney) had a vision to curate “an eclectic blend of imagery, words and artwork.” The result is a dreamy compendium of visual and written artwork that explores magic and queerness through Tyler’s unique story.

To accompany the book, Tyler Gaca created the Gentle Chaos Guided Journal as a “safe place for you to explore the types of emotions and secrets that sometimes feel too big for our bodies to contain. It is for quiet moments of reflection, of love, joy, and sorrow.” One of our favorite poems from the entire Gentle Chaos suite is the poem at the beginning of the journal, aptly titled Gentle Chaos.

One day I will be gone
One day this page will be gone
One day someone else will read this
One day they will be gone too

One day we’ll all be together
One day we’ll all become one

How privileged I feel to take the moments
That are so small and so beautiful
So mundane and significant
So quiet and ephemeral
And make them big
within this small book

How magic it is
to make something personal
Into something communal
In hopes that it will help.
In hopes that it will find its way
To someone who needs it.

To share yourself with the world
Is just as sad as it is sweet

Is just as much a relief as it is a burden

this to me, and me alone
is delicious and sacred

This is gentle chaos

Beyond the book and journal, the Gentle Chaos Pocket Oracle Deck offers portable pieces of delight, inspiration, and magic from the book, with many card images corresponding to a poem found in the included guidebook.

The Make Your Own Magic Suite

With Make Your Own Magic and Your Magical Journal, bestselling author amanda lovelace offers an accessible two-piece set to welcoming magic into your life.

Inspiring poems are sprinkled throughout the book and journal alongside magical journaling prompts, simple explanations of the tenets of witchcraft, words of encouragement, and suggested spells and card spreads.

Here is one of our favorites:

i have this morning ritual
where i open my blinds

& imagine
the sky asking me,

“what will you make of today?”

instead of responding,
all i can do is smile because

i can make anything i want.
i can even remake myself, if i want.

—forever choosing my own adventure.

Your Magical Journal also includes insightful prompts and plenty of space to craft your own poetry if that resonates with you.

The Writer’s Oracle

Do you have a story you want to tell? Work through writer’s block and practice divination with The Writer’s Oracle Deck & Guidebook: 50 Cards To Inspire Your Writing.

Created by fantasy writer Alexandra Rowland and illustrated by David Huang, this unique oracle deck invites you to add a little magic to your writing practice. The 50 cards are split into two themes: Cards of Inquiry and Cards of Dreaming. The Cards of Inquiry are written prompt cards that help spark ideas around themes, plot, character and setting, while the Cards of Dreaming feature lush illustrations for visual inspiration. Rather than enforcing its own rules or structures, the deck uses the Socratic method to help deepen and enrich your writing.

The companion guidebook includes instructions and card spreads to try along with several lined pages for writing notes. We love how Alexandra Rowland reassures us that:

There is no one right way of using the deck except the way it works for you, the way that helps the story get told.
