Q&A
Nikki Van De Car: Your first book, The Soul Searcher’s Handbook, was written for adults. What made you want to write a mystical book for kids?
Emma Mildon: All my books take the reader through a spiritual journey. The Soul Searcher’s Handbook is an introduction to exploring your spirituality and welcomes the reader to learn about everything from astrology, numerology, yoga, and meditation to crystals and aromatherapy. After that, I wrote Evolution of Goddess which asks readers to dive deeper into their spirituality for richer insights and experiences. So it made sense to offer a children’s book to the next generation who will no doubt spiritually out evolve us all, while hopefully enlightening a few parents along the way!
NVDC: I love the diversity of spirituality represented in this picture book! Are they all a prominent part of your own life and practice, or just some of them (and if just some, which ones?)
EM: Every culture has a unique take on spirituality that can offer us new insights and experiences. Why should education be limited to the food, music, dance, art, etc. of different cultures when many rituals and practices around the world share similarities and connections and have valuable lessons to teach us? For me, I was lucky enough to travel while spiritually evolving and writing my books – from the jungle in South America to cobblestone streets in Europe and even a sacred temple in New Orleans – I learned first-hand from shamans, guides, gurus, and teachers who changed my life.
NVDC: I love the way that you describe gurus as a part of everyday life and community. I think so often they are perceived as people who are removed from society and have an almost inaccessible sort of wisdom. Who would you describe as someone who has been a guru for you?
EM: What a powerful question. Without sounding egotistical, me. We are often our best teachers if we let ourselves be! If we follow what makes us curious, investigate what triggers us, and are brave enough to listen to our soul, I believe we have a lot to teach ourselves if we just tune in and listen.
NVDC: You added activities for kids to many of the pages in this book. How did you decide on that interactive format?
EM: All my books have an interactive element because I believe exploring your spirituality has to be immersive, and fun!
NVDC: What is something you do every day to try to bring more magic into your life?
EM: Nature is my secret source of magic as of late. Sun on my face… a walk on the beach…standing on grass….
Nature grounds, centers, and re-energizes me. An easy source of magic we can all tap into!
